Written on commission for Norwalk Middle School, “Struttin’ on Cherry Street” brings with it all the swagger of middle school life by providing something fun for everyone in the ensemble. Beginning in a minor key and a laid back two-feel, the chart evokes Blue Note vibes before turning into a raucous 12-bar blues for improvisation and ensemble work. The chart closes out in the original minor tonality and half-time feel before ending with a few alternating quotes of jazz classics (“Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” and “So What”). This chart is great for young bands - catchy, memorable, simple, and plain ‘ol fun!
